The job market in the United States is ever changing. Sometimes, there seems to be a surplus of jobs hiring. Other times, it’s like all of the jobs have disappeared.

But some jobs are indeed disappearing. Technology and the development of artificial intelligence are both factors in the decrease of many jobs in today’s job market.

According to a White House report, 83% of the jobs where people make less than $20 per hour will be outsourced to automation. Automation is already responsible for the loss of about 4 million manufacturing jobs in the US since the year 2000.

While automation and technology will impact many fields in some way, there are two where automation will likely have a significant impact.

The innovation of automated vehicles could mean the days of employee-operated vehicles are coming to an end. Some estimates indicate that the US will lose between 2 and 3 million driving jobs due to self-driving vehicles within the next 15 years.

These machine-operated vehicles will be able to transport people and things to any location at any hour of the day or night. That makes it easier, cheaper, and more efficient for businesses to use self-driving vehicles as opposed to employee-operated ones. That means people who’ve built a career as a driver will need to start looking for other career opportunities.

Telemarketers and customer service

The change in this field has already taken effect. Businesses no longer rely heavily on using people to do their cold calling or for handling customer service issues. Many people who receive telemarketing phone calls, call to pay a bill, or contact a company with a customer service issue are greeted by an automated system and voice. Companies pay less in the long run for the automated system than they do for employees to answer the phone and respond to simple questions. Their reduced staff is reserved for the more complex issues that can’t be handled by an automated system alone.

While jobs in some areas are declining, there are still many great jobs available for candidates seeking new opportunities. Contact LSG Staffing today to talk about your career opportunities.
